*Women Funders in Animals Rights is an inclusive group that seeks to empower women and other groups historically underrepresented in leadership in the animal rights movement. Women make up 80 percent of the animal rights movement, and the leadership of the movement should reflect that. If you are not a women or a member of a group historically underrepresented in leadership in the animal rights movement, but wish to financially support our mission without formally becoming a Member of WFAR, please become a supporter by making a tax-deductible donation.

Who are WFAR members?

The WFAR giving circle seeks to bring together a group of people with shared values to empower women and other groups historically underrepresented in leadership in the animal rights movement. Members collectively discuss and decide where to make pooled annual grants, as well as meet ten times a year for presentations, discussions and networking.

Membership options

  • General Members

    We recommend that individual GENERAL MEMBERS donate a minimum of $500 annually to seed our Grant Fund. However, we recognize that individuals vary greatly in their ability to donate. Accordingly, individual Voting Members are invited to make a donation based on a sliding scale of $100 (at a minimum), to $500 (recommended), or more (if able and willing).

  • Organization/Entity Members

    Members who are representing an organization/entity are considered ORGANIZATION/ENTITY MEMBERS and are required to donate a minimum of $1,000 annually to seed our Grant Fund.

  • Foundation Members

    FOUNDATION MEMBERS donate at least $5,000 annually to seed our Grant Fund ($10,000 if you are an organization/entity).

  • A Well-Fed World is our fiscal sponsor. Please submit your donation HERE. You will not be considered a Member unless and until you submit your donation in the applicable amount specified above. If you would like to donate by check, please make the check out to our fiscal sponsor, A Well-Fed World, and put “WFAR DONATION” in the memo line of your check and mail to:

  • In deciding the amount to donate, please keep in mind that the more you donate, the more amazing organizations we can fund. Currently, the applications for funding that we receive vastly exceed the amount we have in our Grant Fund, and in each of our grant cycles so far, we have had to turndown many deserving applicants. We would like to change that, and this is one of our reasons for switching to a sliding scale membership fee for individuals.

  • Our monthly Member calls take place the first Monday of each month and are open to all Members. The calls are automatically moved to the following Tuesday if that Monday is a holiday.

    Our Grant Review meeting is in May.

  • There is no meeting attendance requirement; however, we find that regular member attendance helps facilitate informed grant voting.

  • Absolutely!

    If you are not a women or a member of a group historically underrepresented in leadership in the animal rights movement, but wish to financially support our mission without formally becoming a Member of WFAR, please become a supporter by making a tax-deductible donation.

  • Yes, but you will have to disclose your conflict of interest and recuse yourself from voting for that project; because we use ranked choice voting this will not affect your organizations chances of receiving a grant.
